As per the new changes in November, 2015 for immigration purposes, a candidate has to pass the required test(s) from a Home Office approved SELT (Secure English Language Tests) centre. Candidates generally need following 4 types of tests.

• English Test A1 (also known as A1 CEFR or ESOL Entry Level 1 or GESE Grade 2) is must for the applicants seeking for fresh spouse visa. ESOL stands for 'English for Speakers of Other Languages' & CEFR stands 'Common European Framework Reference for Languages' & GESE stands for 'Graded Examinations in Spoken English'. First three tests i.e. A1, A2 & B1 are English tests and 4th one i.e. Life in the UK test is one of the UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) requirements that is required along with B1 English Test when applying for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) or Naturalisation or Citizenship.
